Homemade Reed Spacer

You can buy reed cage spacers to move the reeds slightly farther out of the crankcase. I've heard that it can give a decent boost in midrange power, sorta like a long runner intake. This mod will decrease primary compression a little. Now I could go out and spend $20+ and shipping on a spacer... or I could make one out of my old reed cage for free since I am ditching my stock reeds for a set from Autotech355 on eBay.

Here's the stock reed cage with stainless steel reeds.

Stock Cage

New reed cage with carbon fiber reeds.

With the two side by side, you can see the larger passages in the new cage.

Stock vs Autotech355

You'll need to start out by removing the reeds, stops, etc... from the stock reed cage.

Disassembly

Now you can use a hacksaw, or tool of your choice, to cut the cage free from the base.

Sawin' Away

2 Piece

You may not get a good flush cut, so you'll need to flatten the surface. I used a dremel and then a sanding block.

Work It

Sand It

Once that's smooth, enlarge the opening until the other reed cage can fit through it.

Enlarged

My stock base measures 3.5mm, so with the extra gasket this setup will use it will be nearly 4mm.

With New Reeds

This mod ending up doing just what I had heard. It increased midrange power a bit.
